Kwak! You've Never Seen Sediment Like This Before…

A month of so ago I showed you a bottle of Kwak, a Belgian ale, that had the filthiest amount of thick sediment floating in it that I had ever seen… This past weekend I opened that bottle… and look. This picture has not been modified, altered or edited. There was such an insane suspension of flaky sediment floating in this beer – it was kinda gross, but very intriguing. I’ve never, and no one I have shown this to has ever seen sediment or yeast debris like this. But, I wasn’t going to shy away from it. After all, it’s just beer… right?

The Kwak itself, or the liquid beer tasted delicious, just like a Kwak should. But I could feel the sediment gliding over my palate. It wasn’t as gross as it looks, and for the most part it was just a gentle texture, nothing too extreme. But as the beer was consumed and the sediment began to settle, a very earthy and musty flavor began to engulf the beer. The sediment started to take over and more and more and I was feeling it pass by my tongue. It got a bit tough to drink, and my the time there was only 2 inches of beer, more than half of it was sediment… I’m still not sure what caused this, and I have not heard anything back from the Bosteels Brewery who makes Kwak. It is yet another beer mystery.

    1. Wow! looks pretty…. tasty. I probably would have poured it back through a filter. I don’t mind sediment, but full blown chucks is not what I want to be eating, rather drinking.

    2. Halfway through I filtered it through a paper towel… which cleaned it up… obviously.. haha.. But the musty, earth-like flavors were still there.. I had to give it a shot..

      Cheers!

what the what?! that’s a wild beer! the first pic makes it look more like hot and sour soup than beer!

would you have it again, or was this a ‘try anything once’ beer?

    4. This was pretty crazy… Every bottle of Kwak that I have had was not like this – so I will definitely have Kwak again. This was very much a single and extraordinary case… the cause of which is still to be determined.. ha
