Guinness Black Lager begins life in Ireland

Guinness Black Lager with Diageo's John KennedyOne of the worlds most recognizable beer brands is unveiling a new beer in Northern Ireland in an attempt to increase sales in what apears to be a very difficult trading environment. Guinness has created a “Black Lager” which will be pitched directly at the younger market.

Of course a whole new marketing campaign will follow this, and with some success in Ireland we may eventually see it in North America. However, history does note bode well for the Stout Giant. In 1979 Guinness made an attempt at Guinness Light, which only lasted two years, and in the year 2000 they had to pull Guinness Breo off the shelves as well; a not so clean looking wheat beer they experimented with.

We will soon see how the Black Lagers fares amongst beer drinkers in Ireland, and maybe someday, with some luck for Guinness, we will see it on our shelves.
